Your Society needs YOU.

The upcoming Annual General Meeting of Claygate Gardening Society on November 27th will be our 75th.  We are part of the village community.  Membership is rising.  We are financially in good shape.  We have had another busy year with a lot of activities and added benefits, culminating with Gardeners’ Question Time being recorded here. These things do not happen spontaneously; they are planned and organised by your committee. This has been largely unchanged for three years, the longest serving member having been in office for over 10 years, with an average of 6 years.

Committees do not go on forever however. Whilst an enjoyable role, there has to be provision for succession, for new blood with new ideas.  The existing committee will stay in place for the coming year,  but cannot give any commitments thereafter.  If committee members feel the need to retire before succession has been established, CGS may not survive in its current form, if at all.  The Committee is therefore looking for members to step forward and join us, to provide for succession so that CGS will have an assured future.

Apart from the usual responsibilities of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Talks Secretary and Membership Secretary, we organise visits to significant gardens, represent CGS at village events, organise social events and regular meetings with raffles, teas and (on occasion) wine, liaise with suppliers and other village groups, man and stock the Depot, maintain and develop the website.

Please consider putting yourself, or a friend, forward for committee membership, leading to a leadership role, at the AGM.  Significant gardening experience is not required, just an enthusiasm for things horticultural and a willingness to join in.

Ken Kilmister

Chairman, CGS
