As members of our vibrant gardening community, we understand the profound impact that allotments and community gardens have on our well-being, biodiversity, and local food security. These cherished green spaces not only provide fresh produce but also foster community spirit and environmental stewardship.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is championing a crucial initiative to ensure that allotments and community gardens are prioritized in future urban planning. The proposed ‘Space to Grow’ amendment to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill aims to grant legal protections to these spaces, ensuring they are considered essential in new developments.
With over 157,000 individuals on waiting lists for allotments in England and a significant decline in available land since the 1950s, the need for action is urgent.
