Our visit to Savill gardens 2023

Updated: May 22, 2023

20 members had a great day out on 11th May visiting the Savill Gardens and Valley Gardens in Windsor Great Park.

Designed in 1934 for George V, who thought Windsor lacked a true “garden” space, the two are linked but have very different styles.  The Savill Garden is a 35-acre haven of undulating gardens, woodland and seasonal displays, blending landscape gardening with colourful planting schemes including a rose garden laid out for, and opened by, the late Queen.

The Valley Gardens on the northern shores of Virginia Water, cover 250 acres of undulating valleys with azaleas, magnolias and exotic blooms from all over the world including National Collections of magnolia, rhododendron, Glenn Dale azaleas, as well as Himalayan and Chinese birches and acers of all colours.

The whole is worthy of the word “spectacular”, especially the “Punch Bowl”, a natural deep hollow banked with rhododendrons and azaleas.  Highly recommended!
